OUR APPROACH TO EXAM PREPARATION
At Harmony Music School, exam preparation is a meaningful journey that nurtures confidence, musical understanding, and emotional growth. We honour each student’s natural pace and unique musical voice.
Exams are chosen with care, ensuring the process builds up confidence, feels supportive and balanced, never rushed or pressured.

Our View on Exams
Exams can be a beautiful milestone — a moment of courage and pride.
But we do not treat the exam as something to chase or rush toward.
Children thrive when an exam reflects what they already embody and understand.
When preparation is calm and steady, students become confident, expressive musicians.

Choosing the Right Exam Session
Selecting the right exam session is essential for a positive experience.
There are 2 face-to-face sessions a year. The teacher will advise when the student is ready to enroll for an exam session. Students who are ready and have learned all the exam material will be enrolled to sit the exam.
Students typically spend one year preparing for the grade exam. It is just a rough estimate, though; each student has unique skills and abilities.
Video exam sessions are open throughout the year. The teacher will guide and advise on the best time to enroll.
Your child’s teacher will gently guide this decision based on:
- technical readiness
- musical development
- emotional stability
- aural awareness
- consistency of practice
- confidence in all exam areas
This ensures your child enters their exam feeling supported and well prepared.

Face-to-Face & Online Exams
Face-to-face exams are held twice a year.
Students may choose:
- Repertoire only. Students present pieces (usually 4-5 pieces) to the examiner and are not examined on any other aspects.
- Comprehensive/For Leisure Exam. Students are examined on pieces (usually 3 pieces), technique (scales and exercises), aural skills, and general knowledge.
NOTE: Even if a student selects repertoire exam format, they will still learn technical work, aural skills, and general knowledge during lessons because these skills are essential for healthy musical development.
Online Video Exams
- Available throughout the year
- We record the exam at the studio any time the student is ready
- The teacher will submit the recording to the AMEB
- Repertoire-only format
Your teacher will guide you toward the format that suits your child’s needs.

A Gentle Request to Parents
We warmly ask families to trust the teacher’s guidance in choosing the exam timing and format.
This helps ensure:
- healthy expectations
- a calm preparation process
- emotional wellbeing
- a positive experience for everyone
Rather than aiming for a specific date, we focus on when the child is truly ready, because this builds confidence and well-being.

Important Considerations Before Committing to Exam Preparation
Please read before committing to an exam
1. 45-Minute Weekly Lessons are required for all students who are preparing to sit AMEB exam in any format.
This allows preparation for all the required material, for all exam components, at a comfortable pace.
2. Consistent Daily Practice is essential
Students preparing for exams must practise most days of the week.
Steady practice builds confidence and ease.
3. Consider Your Child’s Schedule
If your child has more than two weekly activities (like for example, sports, tutoring, other classes), exam preparation may become overwhelming and in such cases, preparing for studio concerts may be a healthier and more joyful alternative.
4. Required Exam Materials
Families must purchase the relevant AMEB materials:
- Exam books
- Technical workbook
- Regular lessons and theory books
- Practice Journals
5. Learning Beyond the Exam Pieces
Students will be learning other pieces along the exam repertoire:
- work through lesson books
- working through theory books
- learn additional pieces for the studio recitals
- practicing technique through exercises and short pieces
- this keeps learning enjoyable and develops well-rounded musicianship.

Our Commitment to Your Child
We prepare for exams from a place of:
- readiness
- clarity
- steady progress
- emotional balance
- confidence
—not pressure, not obligation.
When the teacher, parent, and student work together with shared understanding, exams become a celebration of genuine musical growth.
At Harmony Music School, we prepare musicians — not just candidates.
