Program Streams at Harmony Music School
To support different learning goals, commitment levels, and lifestyles, Harmony Music School offers two piano learning streams – COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM and the FOR LEISURE PROGRAM.
Comprehensive Piano Program
Best suited for students seeking structured musical development and long-term progress.
The Comprehensive Program is designed for students who wish to develop strong technical foundations, musical understanding, and high proficiency at the piano.
This stream may include exam preparation, but exams are optional and used as a developmental tool rather than the sole focus. All students preparing for the AMEB exams are required to have a 45-minute lesson.
This program is ideal for:
- Students planning to study piano for at least 3 years.
- Students who enjoy structure, progression, and measurable goals.
- Families committed to consistent practice and long-term learning.
Key expectations:
- Continuous weekly lessons throughout the year are strongly encouraged.
- Regular practice is compulsory
– Minimum expectation: at least 3 focused practice sessions per week. - Students unable to meet this practice commitment are advised to consider the Piano for Leisure Program.
Learning components include:
- Correct and healthy piano technique
- Scales and technical exercises (required regardless of exam participation)
- Aural skills
- Sight-reading
- Music theory
- General musical knowledge
Progression & assessment:
- Exams (e.g. AMEB) are optional but available
- Internal assessments, yearly reports for students that are not sitting AMEB exams are available
- Grade acceleration (jumping grades in AMEB exams) is permitted only for students demonstrating A-level readiness
- Advancement is based on skill mastery, not age or time spent in a grade
This program supports students aiming for confident musicianship, disciplined study habits, and long-term musical growth.
Program Selection & Changes:
Once a program stream is chosen at enrolment, it will be consistently followed by the teacher. Parents may request a change of program at any time by informing the teacher.
Piano For Leisure Program
Best suited for students learning for enjoyment, creativity, and personal expression.
The Piano for Leisure Program is designed for students who wish to enjoy playing the piano without the pressure of exams or intensive technical requirements.
This stream focuses on musical enjoyment, motivation, and personal interest.
Key features:
- Repertoire-focused learning, centred on pieces the student wants to learn.
- Flexible goals and lighter practice expectations.
- No compulsory exams, scales, or technical assessments.
- Emphasis on musical enjoyment, confidence, and self-expression.
This program is ideal for:
- Students with busy schedules.
- Students are learning purely for enjoyment.
- Beginners or returning learners exploring piano without long-term commitments.
- Families seeking a relaxed, low-pressure musical experience.
While good practice habits are encouraged, progress in this stream is not measured by exams or grades, but by engagement, enjoyment, and personal growth.
Choosing the Right Program:
- Both streams are equally valued at Harmony Music School.
- The key difference lies in commitment level, structure, and learning goals.
- Teachers are happy to guide families if you’re unsure which program best suits your child.
Program Selection & Changes:
Once a program stream is chosen at enrolment, it will be consistently followed by the teacher. Parents may request a change of program at any time by informing the teacher.
While the Piano for leisure program is lighter in structure, it is not a reduced or lower-quality program.
Understanding the difference between the two Programs:
Students in the Piano for Leisure Program are taught by the same qualified teachers and are introduced to the same core musical concepts as those in the Comprehensive Program — including technique, musical understanding, reading skills, and healthy playing habits.
Both programs reflect Harmony Music School’s commitment to high-quality teaching, musical integrity, and student wellbeing. The chosen stream simply clarifies the learning pathway, not the value of the education.
